WORKSHOP WITH THE WAVE NETWORK (Women Against Violence Europe): Creating Space for Regulation and Release
I had the privilege of guiding a two-part workshop for the WAVE Network. Within this compact yet intensive format, we created a space for depth, embodiment, and honest connection. Our focus was self-regulation in stressful contexts, especially for those supporting people affected by violence, war, and displacement. We explored how stress responses such as fight, flight, freeze, and fawn show up in the body, and how early signals like shallow breathing or tight shoulders are not weakness, but information. The sessions were practical and embodied. We worked with extended exhale breathing, box breathing, grounding through the feet, the Butterfly Hug, progressive muscle relaxation, and gentle shaking to release stored tension. We moved. We stamped. We shook. We even danced. And at times, emotions surfaced. Some participants cried. There was space for that too. What emerged over those two hours together was a shared reminder: self-regulation is not about controlling ourselves, it is about allowing what is present, safely and with support. In demanding fields of anti-violence work, creating spaces where everything (movement, stillness, tears, anger, breath) is allowed is not a luxury. It is sustainable practice. Supporting others begins with supporting ourselves.
